Political Murals of Northern Ireland
There are a number of different avenues that political activists use to express a certain viewpoint regarding the effectiveness of their political leaders. While the most common ways are to give speeches or write newspaper articles, the political mural has been used extensively to voice displeasure with political leaders as well as to hail figureheads of political movements across the globe while also expressing the values important to a community.
Northern Ireland has a rich history of using murals to educate its citizens on the happenings of their government. During "The Troubles," we see this extensively. An interesting bit about these murals is, if you notice, many of them are painted on the sides of housing complexes, businesses, and schoolyards (not necessarily billboards). The messages are prominent in neighborhoods to strengthen the message and a sense of community. Start the slideshow to view some of these murals. |
