Europe
In our unit on Europe, we discussed a thirty year period of conflict in Northern Ireland known as "The Troubles." This conflict centered primarily on the battle of the people of Northern Ireland and their attempt to gain their independence from the United Kingdom. Secondarily, Northern Ireland wanted unification with the remainder of their countrymen in Southern Ireland. A third source of conflict was the religious battle that took place between the Protestants and Catholics. The Protestants, who mostly composed the Unionist group in Ireland, wanted to remain a part of the union with the UK, whereas the Catholics, who mostly made up the Loyalists, advocated unification of Ireland. This religious battle was a tertiary one, meaning that it was third in the line of objectives but also not necessarily the main source of the tension.
